This document specifies a test method for determining under defined conditions the resistance of a single coating or a multi-coat system of paint, varnish or related product to penetration by scratching with a scratch stylus loaded with a specified load. Penetration of the stylus is to the substrate, except in the case of a multi-coat system, in which case the stylus can penetrate either to the substrate or to an intermediate coat.


The method specified can be carried out


a) either as a "pass/fail" test, by testing with a single specified load applied to the stylus to assess conformity with a particular specification, or


b) as an assessment test by applying increasing loads to the stylus to determine the minimum load at which the coating is penetrated.


NOTE Neither this document nor ISO 1518‑2 specifies a method using a curved stylus, which is specified in ISO 12137. The choice between the three methods will depend on the particular practical problem.

This document gives guidance on how to develop recovery plans and renewal strategies from a major emergency, disaster or crisis (such as the COVID-19 pandemic). It provides guidelines on how to identify the short-term, transactional activities needed to reflect and learn, review preparedness of parts of the system impacted by the crisis, and reinstate operations to build preparedness. It also distinguishes a longer-term perspective of recovery, called “renewal”. In describing renewal, the document provides guidelines on how to identify visionary initiatives to address the strategic impacts and opportunities that have been exposed by the crisis and need to be addressed through transformational, ambitious initiatives. Recovery plans enhance preparedness following a crisis and renewal strategies enhance resilience. The guidelines cover how, in both recovery and renewal, there is a need to identify scalable activity on people, places, processes, power and partners.


This document is applicable to those involved in community, local, national and international recovery and renewal including staff from public, private, voluntary, community and social enterprise sectors, among others.

Specifies a method of determining the bulk factor of a moulding material from its apparent density in the unmoulded form and its density in the moulded form. Knowledge of the bulk factor is of importance for the calculation of the minimum cavity volume in the design of moulds. The bulk factor is given by the quotient of the density of the material in the moulded form, determined according ISO 1183 and the apparent density of the material in the unmoulded form, determinded in accordance with ISO 60 or 61.

ISO 6401:2008 specifies a method for the determination of vinyl chloride monomer in homopolymer and copolymer resins of vinyl chloride and compounded materials. The method is based on sample dissolution and headspace gas chromatography. Concentrations of vinyl chloride in the range 0,1 mg/kg to 3,0 mg/kg can be determined.


A "dry method", suitable for PVC resins but not compounded materials, is widely used within the industry for in-house determinations. A separate International Standard based on this methodology is under development.
